Synopsis
The film is the chronicle of a gang of 5 girls from the 19th arrondissement of Paris, all from immigrant backgrounds. Between the vocational school, the family and the neighbourhood, these teenage girls feel caught between respect for tradition, where male authority dominates, and the desire to integrate into French society. These slices of life, alternating between group moments and solitary moments, give a glimpse of their real lives, and of their dream lives. Throughout the sequences, the confrontation between the girls’ traditional upbringing and their need for emancipation, which by necessity involves secrecy, is apparent. This fierce desire to assert herself, to grow up between two cultures, to be independent, expresses the change of a generation. Discussions and confidences raise real questions about identity, freedom, love, the success of a ‘settled’ life…
